Tree Selection Guide
A comprehensive guide of recommended tree species for planting throughout the region
THE GUIDE — 2ND EDITION
The 2nd Edition of the Treasure Valley Tree Selection Guide was published in January 2024. The original TV Tree Selection Guide was developed by over twenty public, private and non-profit industry partners and facilitated by Treasure Valley Canopy Network and Mary Jane Marlow with Canopi Design in 2008. This comprehensive regional tree selection guide recommends tree species for planting in various landscape settings throughout our region. The 2nd Edition represents added diversity of tree species, additional information about species most suited to benefit widlife and pollinators and fire and climate resilient species.
The Treasure Valley recognizes the value of our community trees, a cumulative benefit of over $9 million each year in the form of clean air, clean water, reduced energy use, enhanced property values and extensive human health benefits. In order for us to recognize these benefits, it is important that we plant the right trees in the right places and for the right reasons. The TV Tree Selection Guide provides all the information necessary to plan for and plant the right trees necessary to build a healthy and thriving urban forest in parks, along streets and at homes all across our region.
WHO CAN USE THE GUIDE
The guide can be used by homeowners, municipal staff, planners, builders, landscape designers and installers and the nursery industry. We encourage everyone planting trees in the Treasure Valley to use this guide to select and plant the right tree in the right place and for the right reason so that it will thrive in your landscape setting for years to come. Most of these trees are generally available at local nurseries.
