City of Trees Challenge
A Climate Action Challenge launched by City of Boise, Treasure Valley Canopy Network & The Nature Conservancy in Idaho
City of Trees Challenge — Grow With Us!
On Arbor Day 2020, we partnered with the City of Boise and Council President Elaine Clegg to plant one tree for every household in Boise and one seedling for every resident in Idaho forests by 2030. In over 3 years, we’ve built strong roots for the Challenge by advancing forward climate leadership at a local and national level. In Spring of 2024, we reached our goal of planting 235,000 forest seedlings in Idaho’s forests thanks to financial support from Arbor Day Foundation and The Nature Conservancy in Idaho and we are advancing effective tree equity with neighborhood partners through the Boise Tree Captains Program which is supported by American Forests, City of Boise’s Climate Division, City of Good and USDA Forest Service.

The 2024 Boise Tree Captains have been trained and are now helping us plan for, plant and grow trees all across Boise. Boise residents are able to request a free tree for their home—while supplies last! Get a tree for your home.
Our 2024 Nursery Partners will include Edwards Greenhouse and Franz Witte. The Spring 2024 Coupon Program has closed. Stay-tuned for announcements of our Fall 2024 Nursery Program later this year.
Purchase a City of Trees Challenge t-shirt and wear it with pride. Each t-shirt will raise enough money to plant and grow 2 forest seedlings in an Idaho forest
Don’t live in Boise? That’s ok, your city can join in the fun too as the Challenge grows across Idaho and the US.

Restoring Idaho Forests
The City of Trees Challenge has planted 235,000 forest seedlings in Boise National Forest to restore lands damaged by the 2016 Pioneer Fire. The Nature Conservancy in Idaho, Treasure Valley Canopy Network, City of Boise and Arbor Day Foundation have partnered with USDA Forest Service Boise National Forest to plant forest seedlings to restore wildlife habitat and build climate resilience in lands damaged by Idaho’s most catastrophic fire in Boise County.
